Generative AI presents a profound challenge to the existing structures and purposes of education. It forces us to reconsider not only how we teach and learn but also, more fundamentally, what education is for. This conceptual paper argues that, in order to integrate AI into education in a way that can meet the major challenges facing humanity, ranging from ecological crisis to the future of democratic societies, we must reframe education. Drawing on the nature and potential of generative AI in conjunction with educational theory, we propose a double dialogic pedagogy that recognises education as both teaching thinking through dialogue and inducting students into participation in the long-term powerful dialogues of culture. We relate this double dialogic pedagogy with AI to education for collective intelligence. This pedagogy positions AI not as a replacement for human thinking, but as a partner in expanding the space of dialogue. By articulating this theoretical foundation, we offer a basis for the future design of educational practices and technologies that can support human flourishing in an age of accelerating technological change.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in education, but mostly to support individual teaching and learning. However, there are good reasons to think that thinking together and solving problems together, Collective Intelligence (CI), is also a valuable outcome of education. Accordingly, our main research question is: How can AI be used effectively to support education for CI? We address this question by means of a literature review and a conceptual analysis in response to the findings of that review. This leads us to propose a three-part framework for thinking about how AI can be used to support education for CI: (i) aiding group formation and composition, (ii) prompting the more effective staging of CI projects, and (iii) improving the process of joint thinking and collaborative problem solving. These three dimensions can be addressed at various levels, from small groups to large collaborations, and in two distinct modes, AI as environment or AI as agent. We conclude the paper with a call for more design-based research of AI, CI and education, building on our proposed framework, developing effective ways to educate students for Collective Intelligence.

Our framework is grounded in an organismic-contextualist developmental perspective that orients enquiry to the design of increasingly complex and integrated CI systems that support coordinated group problem solving behaviour. We focus on pedagogies and infrastructure and we argue that project-based learning provides a sound basis for CI education, allowing for different forms of CI behaviour to be integrated, including swarm behaviour, stigmergy, and collaborative behaviour. We highlight CI technologies already being used in educational environments while also pointing to opportunities and needs for further creative designs to support the development of CI capabilities across the lifespan. We argue that CI education grounded in dialogue and the application of CI methods across a range of project-based learning challenges can provide a common bridge for diverse transitions into public and private sector jobs and a shared learning experience that supports cooperative public-private partnerships, which can further reinforce advanced human capabilities in system design.
